This month, the Global Medical Brigades (GMB) chapter at UCCS is entering their final stages of fundraising for their upcoming trip abroad to Guatemala, where students will provide medical aid and health education to underserved individuals in the community.

In Panama, UNICEF coordinates its humanitarian response with the National Border Service (SENAFRONT), the National Migration Service (SNM), the National Secretariat for Children, Adolescents and Family (SENNIAF), Civil Protection (SINAPROC), and the Ministry of Health (MINSA). As part of the coordination Human Mobility Group of the United Nations, UNICEF implements services in the sectors of WASH, Child Protection, GBV, and maternal and child health, through its implementing partners RET Americas, Global Brigades, SOS Children’s Villages, HIAS, and the Panamanian Red Cross. On the ground, UNICEF works closely with Doctors Without Borders, the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC), and the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF). Global Medical Brigades has partnered with Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin for a pair of blood drives in honor of late College of Nursing instructor Kit Stevic. The blood drives will take place on Wednesday, March 22, from noon to 6 p.m. and Friday, March 31, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the AMU.

Northern Michigan University students in a social entrepreneurship special topics course last semester worked with refugees in Greece to improve their businesses. The students collaborated with Global Brigades, a nonprofit based in the United States with satellite offices that help communities reach health and economic goals. Global Brigades picks the businesses run by clients from different countries and connects them with students.

Hannah Marie Blair, a Middlebury graduate from the Class of 2017, has received a Schwarzman Scholarship for graduate study in China. Blair is one of 151 students to receive the prestigious scholarship, which funds a one-year master’s degree at Tsinghua University in Beijing. She is part of the eighth class of Schwarzman Scholars, which includes students from 36 countries and 121 universities.

A simple toothbrush convinced a Mabou Harbour woman to join her sister on a medical mission to Central America this spring.
Jessie Helen MacNeil, 21, and Nora MacNeil, 20, will travel to Honduras in May as part of Global Brigades, an international non-profit organization that helps communities improve their health care, economic development, and water and sanitation.
Nora, a third-year medical science student at Dalhousie University who plans to become a doctor, went on a mission to Guatemala last year. While sharing stories about the experience with Jessie Helen, she mentioned many people there had never seen a toothbrush until the volunteers gave them simple dental hygiene packs.

A pair of sisters are taking to the stage later this month to help fundraise for a humanitarian trip next year to spend a week to 10 days as part of a Global Medical Brigades mission. Global Brigades is an international organization helping communities find sustainable solutions to improve health, water, sanitation, and economic infrastructures in depleted communities all over the world.
