Overview

Tierra Morena is located within the municipality of Nacaome in the department of Valle in southern Honduras. The community members work in agriculture and cultivating corn, the houses are often made of mud and stone, and they don’t have an existing water system. The only way for them to have access to drinking water is through the two wells located around the community. The top needs expressed by Tierra Morena’s inhabitants during their initial communications with Global Brigades are a water system, public health projects, and improvement of the school.

HEALTH CARE ACCESS

The Honduran government provides two different types of health centers throughout rural Honduras: Centros de Salud Médico Odontológico (CESAMOs) and Centros de Salud Rural (CESARs). CESAMOs are the larger of the two, often found in municipalities, and typically have at least one physician on staff at all times with nurses and potentially a dentist. CESARs are found sporadically in rural communities and generally have a single nurse available. Even with this coverage, it is important to note that medications, supplies, and materials are often not available in these health centers and the physician density in Honduras remains around 1,220 people for every one doctor. According to the World Health Organization, there should be a maximum of 435 people per physician to qualify a country as having adequate access to medical attention.

The community members of Tierra Morena travel 1 km to reach their healthcare center. Compared to other comunities, they don’t have to walk a lot but whenever they visit the healthcare center, it is not always adequately staffed nor does it always have adequate medications in stock. The most common illnesses children face are the common cold, gastrointestinal, and respiratory issues. The most common illnesses seen in adults are hypertension and common colds.

TIERRA MORENA’S WATER SOLUTION:

The optimal solution to improve the system in this community would be to construct a water storage tank of 5,000 gallons in a new site of the community to have equal distribution of the water 24 hours a day, 7 days a week year round.

The distribution network will be composed of approximately 3 km of adequate pipe to achieve optimal pressure so that water reaches all households. This water system will benefit around 39 households and 155 individuals.
