People in San Francisco de Soroguara are primarily dedicated to agriculture, cattle raising, and day labor. Most homes in the community are made out of adobe, cement blocks, and brick. Global Brigades is currently working on implementing the Holistic Model implementation in San Francisco de Soroguara as part of Global Brigades’ strategic plan in Honduras.

SAN FRANCISCO DE SOROGUARA’S ENGINEERING CHALLENGE:

Existing Water System in San Francisco de Soroguara

With an existing water project built in 1996, San Francisco de Soroguara’s Water Council has identified the need for renovation and expansion of many of its components, after almost 25 years of service.

After a very successful experience working along with Club Rotario (Rotary Club) Choluteca in 2017, a new partnership opportunity arose by the end of 2018 with Club Rotario Tegucigalpa Sur and Global Brigades. In March of 2019, the local GB Engineering staff performed the field mapping, survey, and design in order to improve the water system for the community of San Francisco de Soroguara. One month later, the design report, containing the plan to benefit more than 430 houses, was presented to the general assembly together with our partner: Club Rotario TS.

SAN FRANCISCO DE SOROGUARA’S ENGINEERING SOLUTION:

Existing water system in need of improvement in San Francisco de Soroguara

During the water/engineering assessment and mapping/surveying stages, problems with the distribution network, dam sedimentation, high turbidity during the rainy season and the irrational use of the drinking water were identified as the main challenges faced by San Francisco de Soroguara’s water system.

At the water source bed, high loads of suspended sediments are captured by the dam, which interrupts the natural course of the river current. This high amount of sediment trapped by the dam increases the turbidity levels of the delivered water, affecting its quality, especially during the rainy season.  

Some other issues can be noticed not just at the source site, but also at the location of the sand settling tank and along the conduction line. The dimensions of the sand filter, for example, do not correspond to those required for the high range of discharges that flow from the river and through it. It is not capable of performing its main function, along with the fact that it’s not in good physical condition. The conduction line, on the other hand, shows leaks and its PVC segments are exposed to the atmosphere’s natural phenomena. Some parts of the CL were damaged by recent forest fires and looked in really bad conditions. A replacement is mandatory even though the hydraulic capacity is appropriate. Some improvements in the type of material and pipe pressure resistance are also required.

The community survey also showed the necessity of expanding the storage capacity of the community’s water system. The current fifteen-thousand-gallon tank, provides the required daily storage for nearly 40% of the population demand, according to national design standards. The improvement of the pipe diameters and expansion of the network has also been pointed out after the initial assessments and design analysis.

Global Brigades team conducts a visit of San Francisco de Soroguara

The improvement and expansion of the San Francisco de Soroguara’s water system include the construction of a brand-new sand filter with a capacity not less than 100GPM. It is also necessary to perform sediment control techniques upstream from the dam, in order to reduce as much as possible the sedimentation levels during the rainy season.

A complete replacement of the pipes comprising the conduction line is required. This is necessary in order to have more efficient water transport from the dam to the tank system. The pipes need to be of the proper material, diameter, and pressure resistance and be located at the required depth in accordance with the national construction standards. The installation of air valves along the conduction line and distribution network is also one of the proposed improvements.

The future tank system will be integrated by 2 tanks: the existing one that is going to be restored, and a brand-new tank to be built with a capacity of 25,000 gallons. Additionally, the distribution network is planned to be expanded. The increase in pipe diameters demands the replacement of at least 44% of the existing pipes. The expansion of the network also includes 1.2km of extra pipes to be located where there are no existing pipes currently. The installation of water meters will help reduce unnecessary water waste. Finally, the legalization and training of the water council are also part of the integrated empowerment of the community. Basic sanitation committee and watershed protection committees will be created, too.
