Overview

San Román is a village located in Stann Creek district in the southeastern region of Belize, Global Brigades began working in San Román in 2024. The typical house in San Román is made of cement blocks and wood and most of the community members work in agriculture planting and harvesting corn, beans, and plantain throughout March, September, October, and November. The community also have a few grocery stores and a bar. The community has a water system built in 2003 that is running properly with 180 houses connected to it, and they hope to expand the connection to all the houses in the community in the future.

The most common illnesses seen in children are fever, cough, and diarrhoea and in adults are headaches, back problems, diabetes, and High blood pressure. The top needs expressed by Santa Román inhabitants during their initial communications with Global Brigades include improving and expanding the water system, targeting health needs, and children’s education

HEALTH CARE ACCESS:

The community of San Román has a community health centre with a nurse attending to the community members’ health needs. This centre doesn’t have a lab and there are no other private clinics so, community members have to travel to other cities in case they need specific medical tests. Community members can request specific meds to be delivered to the community but pharmaceuticals supply is intermittent.

DENTAL CARE  ACCESS:

There’s no dental clinics inside San Roman community, which makes it more difficult for the community members due to the high prices of care and, just like for some hospital and emergency visits, they must leave the community for this care.

Working closely with the Medical Program, the Dental Program provides fillings, extractions, and fluoride treatments as a standard part of Medical Brigades. Most community members do not have regular access to dental care due to the lack of a dentist within a reasonable distance.
